PREFACE.

THE Collection now placed before the Reader originated in the suggestion of a friend, while talking over some long-forgotten work on the subject.

Care has been taken to exclude all those Epigrams, whether old or new, which are of doubtful propriety, or which trifle with the name of the Deity, and to admit only such as have point, pith, and power.

The nature of an Epigram is sufficiently explained in the poetical Introduction; and it is hoped that the present Compilation will verify its title.
