BY W. J. WESTON, M.A., B.Sc. LOND. " HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, THE POLYTECHNIC, LONDON LONDON: W. B. CLIVE University Tutorial Press Lo HIGH ST., NEW OXFORD ST., W.C. PREFACE. THE practice of using money as a medium of exchange is one of those things so familiar that the underlying principles are rarely considered, and more rarely understood. Yet the subject of Banking and Currency is of so great importance that it has now obtained recognition as worthy of a place in University Courses. The University of London, for instance, prescribes Banking and Currency as part of the Intermediate Examination in the Faculties of Economics and of Commerce. The Syllabus for these Examinations, drawn up as it has been by experts, is the frame-work for the present book. This, though intended primarily as a handbook for candidates, will also serve, one hopes, as an introduction to the subject for all interested in our currency system and in its changes consequent upon the Great War. The Author's best thanks are due to Mr. Albert Dunn, B.Com., for reading the proofs and making a number of useful suggestions. 524759 |
