STERNE'S SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY, THROUGH France and Italy. Price f 1.50. In the power of approaching and touching the finer feelings of the heart, Sterne has never been excelled, if, indeed, he has ever been equalled; and may be at once recorded as one of the most affected, and one of the most simple writers the greatest plagiarists, and one of the most original geniuses as one of whom England has produced. WALTER SCOTT. INTRODUCTION. Sterne's inimitable master-piece, the Sentimental Journey, has passed through a multiplicity of Editions, which have been edited by a variety of differently gifted men, most of whom have not apprehended Sterne's meaning; this is evident, from the absurdity of the Punctuation: his Dashing introduced a new species of Pointing, which is now in vogue throughout Europe; but, Dashes may and ought to be used Grammatically which is but seldom the case. The edition now presented to the Public, though printed in Holland, contains fewer absurdities in Punetuation, and a less number of what is commonly called Errors of the Press, than any edition hitherto published --not excepting the boasted "accurate" editions of England. In this edition two Dashes may be found, the one double the length of the other both used Grammatically that is, the one cannot, with propriety, be exchanged for the other; nor is any other Point used together with the Dash, as is too commonly always absurdly the custom with those who know not, that the Dash is a Grammatical Point in Punctuation. The Sentimental Journey contains much more than the mere words express much more than the generality of readers apprehend; and were, Sterne's meanings elucidated, the Commentary would exceed the Text! as |
