His boyhood was spent on his father's farm, in the rich and fertile valley of the River Po, and he was always essentially a countryman at heart; he was shy in company, and did not enter the world of business and politics, but in due course his poetry brought him into close contact with many of the important people of the Roman state, including Maecenas, the leading patron of literature, and the Emperor Augustus himself. -- Introduction. |
