blood of his crofs by him, to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I fay, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you that were fometimes alienated, and enemies in your minds by wicked works; yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh, through death, to prefent you holy, unblameable, and unreproveable in his fight.

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, Heb. 9.. but by his own blood, he entered in once 12, 14. into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. How much more fhall the blood of Chrift, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without fpot to God, purge your confciences from dead works to serve the living God?

For Chrift alfo hath once fuffered for 1 Pet. fins, the Juft for the unjust, that he might 3. 18. bring us to God: being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the spirit.

Hereby perceive we the love of God, 1 John because he laid down his life for us.

3, 16. And for this cause he is the Mediator of Heb. 9. the New Testament, that by means of the redemption of tranfgreffions that were under the First Teftament, they which are called might receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

Q. Is Chrift then the Mediater?

Q. But whereas most of thefe fcriptures before-mentioned do hold forth, that the death and fufferings of Christ were appointed for the destroying, removing, and remitting`of fin; did he fo do it while he was outwardly upon earth, as not to leave any thing for himself to do in us, nor for us to do, in and by his frength?

A. For even hereunto were ye called, because Chrift alfo fuffered for us, leaving

us an example, that ye fhould follow his steps.

That I may know him, and the power Phil. of his refurrection, and the fellowship of 3. 10. his fufferings, being made conformable to his death.

CHAP. IV.

Of the New Birth, the inward appearance of Chrift in Spirit, and the unity of the Saints with him.

Queft.-DOTH Chrift promife then to come again to his difciples?

Q. Was this only a special promife to these difciples? Or, is it not the common privilege of the faints?

A. For thus faith the high and lofty 57.15. One, that inhabits eternity, whofe name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place, with him alfo that is of a contrite and humble fpirit, &c.

Q. What faith the fame apostle of the neceffity of this inward knowledge of Christ, and of the new creature, beyond the outward?

A. Wherefore henceforth know we no 2 Cor. 5. 16, 17, man after the flefh; yea, though we have known Chrift after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. Therefore if any man be in Chrift, he is a new creature; old things are paffed away, behold all things are become new.

But ye have not fo learned Chrift; if fo Eph. 4. be that ye have heard him, and have been 23, 24 taught by him, as the truth is in Jefus : that ye put off, concerning the former converfation, the old man which is corrupt, according to the deceitful lufts; and be renewed in the fpirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Q. Is this Chrift within, the mystery of God and hope of glory, which the apoftle preached ? A. To whom God would make known Col.1 what is the riches of. the glory of this 27, mystery among the Gentiles; c 3
