THE following work consists of a course of Lectures preached on the Thursday evenings in Lent 1877. They are now published (with additions) at the request of those who heard them. The Author makes no pretence to originality. His aim has been not novelty but truth. He desires to express his obligations to many labourers in the wide field of prophetic study. In particular, he has reaped much benefit from the lucid expositions of Rev. C. Molyneux, during his ministry at St. Paul's, Onslow Square; from the able and scholarly Lectures on Daniel by the late Dr. Tregelles; and from the writings of Mr. B. W. Newton, whose accurate knowledge of and deep insight into the Word of God are not known as he ventures to think they should be. Many of the views upheld will provoke hostile criticism, especially that contained in Chapter V., |
