The annual number of the Index for 1908
differs little in plan from that of 1907.
Fewer old books have been recatalogued for
the purpose of noting changes in price as
that work was done with a good deal of
thoroness last year. A much larger num-
Ler than usual of Library of Congress card
numbers will be found owing to the gen-
erosity of the Card Division of the Library
in checking our proof with their card cata-
log. There are included also a larger number
of government publications and of valuable
pamphlets and a larger number of books
have been given analytical entries.
following is a partial list of the books
which have been partly or completely an-
alyzed, the numbers of entries being indi-
cated after each title:

A New List of Periodicals

A second edition of the valuable "Guide
to Current Periodicals and Serials of the
United States and Canada." by Henry
Ormal Severance, has just been published.
In the new edition the compiler has been
assisted by Charles Harper Walsh of the
Copyright office, Library of Congress, un-
der whose supervision the "Guide" has been
checked by the card index of current peri-
odicals received by the Library of Con-
gress, and by the "Handbook of Learned
Societies," published by the Carnegie Insti-
tution. From the former list 1,146 new
ttles were added; from the latter 210; from
other sources 910, making the total number
of additions to the present edition of the
"Guide" 2,266 titles, and the total number of
titles more than 10,000. These titles, as in
the former edition, are arranged alphabetic-
ally first by author and second by subject.

The Cumulative Book Index is greatly
indebted to Mr. Severance's volume for
often needed and much needed informa-
tion. Our copy of the book is so frequent-
ly consulted in all of our departments that
its whereabouts at any particular moment
