301. A SIMPLE word is formed from a single stem; a COMPOUND word, from two or more stems.

Thus ağıó-λoyo-s worthy of mention is a compound, formed from the stems of the two simple words ǎcio-s worthy and λóyo-s speech. The compound stem may contain a preposition, or other uninflectible word, as in ano-ypáp-w to write off;-it rarely contains an inflected form, as in vesOIKO-s ship-house, where veús is the inflected genitive of vaû-s.

302. VERBAL NOUNS (both substantive and adjective) are formed from verb-stems by the addition of derivative endings or SUFFIXES.

Thus Tiμń (Tīμā) payment, value, honor, is a verbal substantive formed by adding the suffix a to the stem of Tí-vw to pay. -a. A few verbals are formed without suffixes: thus pλóg (pλoy, 306 c) flame fr. pλéy-w to burn.

303. A noun-stem, with its suffix, may be used in forming the stem of a new verb. Such verbs are said to be DENOMINATIVE (derived from nouns).

Thus from T-μa, the stem of Tμn honor, comes the denominative verb Tuά-w to honor. If the stem of a verb contains no suffix, the verb is said to be PRIMITIVE OF RADICAL, and its stem is called a ROOT: thus Tí-vw is a primitive verb, and τ a root. Most roots are of one syllable: originally all were so.
