But, among nations in a civilized flate, no art has been cul tivated with more care, than that of language, (tyle, and com pofition. The attention paid to, it, may, indeed, be aflumed as one mark of the progrefs of fociety towards its moft' hnproved period. For, according as fociety improves and flourifl1es, men acquire more influence oveenne another by means of reafoning and difcourfe; and in proportion as that influence is felt to enlarge, it mull: follow, as a natprab confequence, that they will bellow more care upon themetho ds of exprefling their conceptions with propriety and eloquence.
