9 of business of any known owner, or assignee of such 10 person, or of his agent, of the amount of such bill, 11 note, check or draft, and all interest, damages and 12 costs, which may have accrued at the time of such 13 tender, all interest and damages shall thereupon cease 14 on account of the same; and no person shall recover 15 interest or damages against any bank for any bill, 16 note, check or draft, payment of which was tendered 17 on presentment, in gold or silver of the legal cur18 rency of the United States.

SEC. 2. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with 2 the provisions of this act are hereby repealed.

IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND

FORTY-NINE.

AN ACT additional to the sixty-fifth chapter of the Laws of Maine, entitled "An act giving further time to redeem lands forfeited for taxes, and for the disposition of lands which may hereafter become forfeited."

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in Legislature assembled, as follows:

SECTION 1. Whenever the Land Agent shall offer 2 for sale any tract or township of land, by virtue of the 3 provisions of the act to which this is additional, he shall 4 fix a minimum price thereon, equal to the amount of 5 the taxes, interest, and charges certified by the State 6 Treasurer, together with all the charges thereon

7 incurred at his office; and if no person shall appear 3 to purchase the same at such public sale, the Land 9 Agent is hereby authorized, at any time within one 10 year from that time, to sell any such tract or town11 ship at private sale at such minimum price, adding 12 thereto the accruing interest, at the rate of twenty 13 per cent. per annum up to the time when he shall so 11 sell the same; and the owner or owners of any tract 15 or township so sold shall be entitled to redeem the 16 same at any time within one year from the day when 17 such tract or township was offered by the Land Agent 18 at public sale, upon the terms and conditions of the 19 act to which this is additional.

SEC. 2. If any tracts or townships which may here2 after be advertised and offered at public sale, as 3 provided in this act and in the act to which this is 4 additional, shall remain unsold at the expiration of 5 one year from the day when they were so offered, 6 the Land Agent is authorized and directed to sell the 7 same at auction to the highest bidder, first giving 8 notice of the time and place of sale, by publishing 9 such notice three weeks successively in the State 10 paper, and in some paper in the county where such 11 lands lie, if any is published therein, and the sale
