out works, is spoken for to take away clearly all merit of our works, as being unable to deserve our justification at God's hands, and thereby most plainly to express the weakness of man, and the goodness of God; the great infirmity of ourselves, and the might and power of God; the imperfection of our own works, and the most abundant grace of our Saviour Christ; and therefore wholly to ascribe the merit and deserving of our justification unto Christ only, and his most precious blood-shedding. This faith the Holy Scripture teacheth us; this is the strong rock and foundation of the Christian religion."

Homilies of Salvation, and of Faith.

This doctrine, necessary for all men, is peculiarly requisite within the walls of a prison. Those who feel that they are tied and bound with the chain of their sins, will look with more earnestness to the hand of Him from whom they expect salvation.-And may they find it! May the blessed Angel of the Covenant descend into their prison, and say unto the prisoners-Go forth; and unto those that are are in darkness-Shew yourselves! May the kindness of the Almighty bind up these broken-hearted, proclaim evangelical liberty

to these captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound! May He also give his grace to those whose duty it is to watch over these afflicted, to comfort those that mourn, to feed them with pure spiritual food, even the bread of life, which will sustain their souls for ever! Amen.
