HE first three or four of the following stories T were written without any intention or thought of publication. The object for which they were written was the amusement of certain children belonging to diverse families, who were more or less interested in the district, a' part of which Danby Dale is, and who knew that the author, when his own children were little, had often been asked and had responded to the request to tell them stories involving local scenery and local characters (however imaginary), as well as local myths or folk-tales.
