HER LAST LETTER.

We meet no more! I send the token
Which as a pledge of love I cherish d;
When this heart-utterance is spoken

The passion which it breathes has perish'd. Sweet thoughts about the trinket hang

Of days, alas! that now are o'er, But though it costs a bitter pang,

I send it back: We meet no more!

We meet no more! This tear-stain'd letter Bears words which would perforce be spoken,

A torrent which no power could fetter,

The wailings of a fond heart broken.
Ah! while I write-like rising ocean,
Come memories of days of yore;
But all is fled, save my devotion,

Which breathes its last: We meet no more!

We meet no more! Perhaps the sentence
Has now no sadden'd sound for thee;
But when, in after years, repentance

Comes, with gentle thoughts of me-
Those words will tell how strong the feeling,
Which, fountain-like, with tears gush'd o'er;
And while its passion was revealing,
Despairing wrote-"We meet no more!"

THE LAST ADIEU.

My blessing rest upon thee,
Thou charmer of my life!
The love that early won thee,
And joy'd to call thee "wife!"
Though death is stealing o'er me,
Is like a star, whose ray
Disputes the coming of the night,
And lengthens out the day.

Oh may the good defend thee,
When I have fall'n asleep;
May Heav'n its blessing send thee,
And angels round thee keep!
Sweet star! the night approaches-
Thou'rt brighter to my view-
But oh! the clouds are gathering-
Light of my life-adieu!

THE EDITOR.

WORDS AND WINDS.
WORDS are like Summer wind,
When sweetly spoken;

That unto drooping flowrets bring
Refreshing dew-drops scattering.
Yet not like winds-for kind words dwell
Deep in the heart's most sacred cell,
And part from memory never.

The winds but breathe o'er each fair flower,
Or kiss them with a fragrr at shower,
And then are gone for ever.

Words are like Autumn's wind,

When harshly spoken:

Whose heightening power upon the plain
Whirls far the leaves that yet remain-
Yet not so keen the wild wind blows
As words that wound the heart's repose,
And cause the tear to flow.
The summer leaves will bloom again-
Not so the heart, its griefs remain,
Deep hid from outward show.
Words are like Winter's wind,

When breath'd in wrath;

Which in its fury o'er the wild
Bends the tough oak-the forest child-
Yet the fell storm hath not such power,
As anger speaks in passion's hour,

Nor gives more lasting woe.
The whirlwind pass'd, the dread is o'er,
The bark hopes soon to gain the shore,
Where silent waters flow.

Words are like Spring's sweet wind,
When whisp'ring Hope,
Whose young breath revels o'er the fields,
Till the glad earth its treasure yields.
And yet not so-for words thus spoken
Will cheer the spirit, e'en when broken,
And give it joys to cherish.
The winds but woo the flowers gay,
Then bear their incense far away,
And leave their forms to perish.
