52 ENGLISH SONGS.-An extraordinary and unique Collection of 1250 Broadside Ballads and Popular Songs of the 17th and 18th Centuries, with the Music, mostly engraved on one side only of separate sheets and half-sheets, by T. Cross, J. Walsh, D. Wright, and other well-known music publishers. Accurately arranged in alphabetical order of the first lines of each song, and contained in 3 solander cases, £95.

This remarkable collection of ephemeral and popular Songs was mainly formed by the late Mr. Julian Marshall as the result of many years' careful and assiduous labour and research among the many and various operatic and musical publications of the period from the Restoration to the Regency. The whole of the musical compositions in this series are ANONYMOUS, hence their arrangement under the first words of the songs, of many of which various editions have been collected, but no actual duplicates have been admitted. The language of the songs naturally reflects the somewhat lax humour and conviviality of the age, but the music is invaluable as showing the level attained by the popular taste during the period.

53 ENGLISH SONGS.-Musica Oxoniensis. A Collection of Songs: for One and Two Voices, with the ThoroughBass. Published by Francis Smith, and Peter de Walperen, Letter-Founder, by whom 'twas Cut on Steel, and Cast, by the Directions of the former. Oxford: Printed by Leon. Lichfield: And are to be sold by John Walsh, and John Hare, London, 1698. Folio, a very fine uncut copy, sewed, £14 148.

This excessively rare work appears to be unrecorded in Musical bibliographies, nor can we find any account of the publishers, Francis Smith and Peter de Walparen. They dedicate the book to Thomas Hinxman, Esq., of Trinity College in Oxford, and add an address "To all Lovers of Musick," in which they announce their new method of musicprinting, and explain the use of the character called a Natural. The Songs printed are by Mr. John Welldon and Mr. Richard Goodson, the latter being taken from "The Mask of Orpheus and Euridice: perform'd at the Boarding-School at Besselsleigh, in October, 1697."

54 ENGLISH SONGS.-Thesaurus Musicus. A Collection of two, three, and four Part Songs, Several of them never before Printed. The Whole revis'd, carefully corrected and figur'd by a Judicious Master. The earlier portion of the volume consists of a series of Latin verses welcoming Charles I to Edinburgh. One of the writers signs himself Io. Armorius, and an early MS. note tells us This man at the beginning of the trobles being a Regent of St. Andrews when the comon prayer book was to be read in the great Church ther the mob endeavoured to disturb it, and this man beatt them all off singly by himselfe and afterwards went abroad to some place in or near Guiny wher he was chosen a King and Liv'd and dy'd a King."

The fact that this charming volume once belonged to Johnson's biographer, Boswell, and bears his autograph, “James Boswell, Edinburgh, 1778," enhances its interest.
