Make Provision concerning the future Regulation of certain Appointments connected with Cathedral and Collegiate Churches.

HEREAS Her Majesty was pleased to issue, on the Tenth Preamble. Day of November One thousand eight hundred and fiftytwo, Her Commission to certain Persons therein named to inquire into the State and Condition of the several Cathedral and 5 Collegiate Churches in England and Wales, and into the Duties of the Members and Ministers thereof, and other Matters connected therewith, with a view to the Suggestion of such Measures as (regard being had to the Purposes for which such Cathedral and Collegiate Churches were originally founded) may render the same more efficient 10 and useful in promoting and extending the Means of Public Worship and Religious Education, and in enforcing Ecclesiastical Discipline, in the several Dioceses in which they are situate, and also (where Occasion may seem to require) with a view to the Suggestion of such Measures as may make the said Cathedral and Collegiate Churches, 15 and the Revenues thereof, available in aid of the Erection of new Sees, or of other Arrangements for the Discharge of Episcopal Duties: And whereas it is expedient that the Suggestion and Adoption of the Measures contemplated by the said Commission should not be

interfered with by reason of Interests becoming vested under such Appointments as herein-after mentioned: Be it enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the Authority of the same, 5 as follows:

I. Every Person who may be appointed to any Preferment or Office in or connected with any Cathedral or Collegiate Church in &c. in Cathe- England or Wales upon any Vacancy which has happened since the One thousand eight hundred and 10 may happen before the First Day of January One thousand eight hundred and fifty-five, shall be deemed to have taken and shall hold such Preferment, or Office subject to the Abolition thereof, or to such Regulations affecting the same as may hereafter be made by Authority of Parliament, or by any lawful 15 Authority by which in case such Vacancy had continued such Preferment or Office might have been abolished or regulated; and no such Person shall by reason of such Appointment be deemed to have acquired any Title or Claim to Compensation in case such Preferment or Office be hereafter abolished or altered.

II. This Act shall extend to every Nomination, Collation, Presentation, Election, Donation, and other Appointment whatsoever made or to be made (upon any such Vacancy as aforesaid) to any Deanery, or to any Canonry or other Dignity or Office in or connected with the Chapter of any Cathedral or Collegiate Church 25 in England or Wales, or to any Office, Preferment, or Employment in any minor Corporation in any such Cathedral or Collegiate Church, or to any other Office or Employment in any such Cathedral or Collegiate Church, or to any Benefice (with or without Cure of Souls), Office, or Employment in the Patronage or Gift of any such Dean, 30 Chapter, or minor Corporation, or of any Member of any such Chapter or minor Corporation, or to any Mastership, Wardenship, or other Office or Employment in or connected with any School, Hospital, or eleemosinary Foundation in the Gift of any such Dean, Chapter, or minor Corporation, or of any Member of any such Chapter or 35 minor Corporation; and this Act shall also extend to any Appropriation made or to be made upon or in consequence of any Vacancy after the said Day of One thousand eight of any Residentiary House to any Canon
