GOSPEL. Luke xii. 1. 8.

T that time: Jesus said to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing covered, which shall not be revealed; nor hidden, that shall not be known. For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness, shall be published in the light; and that which you have spoken in the ear in chambers, shall be proclaimed on the house-tops. And I say to you my friends: be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will skew you whom you shall fear fear ye him, who, after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows. And I say to you. Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of Man also confess before the Angels of God.

SECRET. Mercifully receive, O Lord, the offerings consecrated to thee, by the merits of thy holy Martyrs John and Paul, and grant they may be a continual support to us. Thro'.

COMM. Wisd. iii. Though they suffered torments in the sight of men, God only tried them: like gold in a furnace he proved them, and like an holocaust he accepted them.

Anth. These are two olive-trees, and two lights shining in the presence of the Lord: they have power to shut up the heavens, and to open their gates; for their tongues are become the keys of heaven.

N. B. If this Feast should fall on a Sunday, it is transferred till after the Octave of the Apostles; and the Mass is of the Sunday with a Commemoration of St. John the Baptist and on the preceding Saturday is said the Mass of the Vigil, as below.

N those days: Peter and John went up to the temple at the ninth hour of prayer. And a certain man, who had been lame from his mother's womb, was carried whom they laid every day at the gate of the temple, which was called the Beautiful Gate, that he might ask alms of such as went into the temple. He, when he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked to receive alms. But Peter with John looking at him, said : Look at us. And he looked earnestly at them, hoping that he should receive something from them. Then Peter said: Silver and Gold I have none; but what I have, that I give thee; in the name of Jesus of Nazareth rise up and walk. And taking him by the right hand, he raised him up; and forthwith his feet and soles received strength. And he leaping up, stood and walked; and he went with them into the temple, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God. And they knew him, that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
