it is ever a waymark and a delight.

In like

manner a man may, upon the lower level of secular life, be pushed by the prosperous, and covered over and put out of sight by the socially vigorous and great; but if, in his weakness and helplessness here, his soul has laid hold upon Christ, he rises up into his native element,— heaven's light, and life, and love; strong in faith, fervent in prayer and praise, his spirit lives above the world. And then, strange but very true it is, that all life around him is quickened to aspire, and is helped nearer to God.

See in this the solution of one of life's greatest problems-the weak are made strong by being found in God, partakers of His nature, and inheritors of His kingdom. Their life, hid with Christ in God, is drawn up out of many other forms of power that lie in common places, away from strife about the prizes the many contend for.

"What wouldst thou have a good great man obtain,
Place-titles-salary-a gilded chain,

Or throne of corpses which his sword hath slain?
Greatness and goodness are not means, but ends.
Hath he not always treasures, always friends,

The good great man?-three treasures, love, and light,
And calm thoughts, regular as infant's breath;

And three firm friends, more sure than day and night, Himself, his Maker, and the angel Death."

If this be so, we see the true mode of Christian life, its distinct sphere and its great reward. Jesus said, "As the Father hath sent me, so send I you," not to struggle for selfish gains, but to communicate the knowledge of that eternal life that is so freely given to us. We shall become all things to all men-not to gain something from them, but to impart something to them; yea, we shall travail in birth for souls, that Christ may be formed in them, in this new eternal life.

Nor need we doubt that in this the science of this world, as well as the grace of God, will wait upon our efforts. Geography will teach us to find depraved and wretched humanity, and will bear upon its most lasting records the fact that such were redeemed and civilized by the Gospel of Christ. Astronomy from all her high places will learn whose "delights were with the sons of men," until the song of redemption surpasses the harmonies of the starry spheres. Mathematics will set herself to number that which at present no man can number-the multitude of the redeemed of every people and nation and tongue.

Yea, a sanctified intellect will ponder peacefully prehistoric times, and learn again this truth, "To wit, that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself," with Divine purpose and grace given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.

CHRISTIAN HEROISM.

"And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh : and they said unto them, The Lord look upon you, and judge: because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us. And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Lord, wherefore hast Thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that Thou hast sent me?" "And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun."-EXODUS v. 20-22; xvii. II, 12.

the world, angels, and men: for that issue it must prepare itself by cultivating good judgThe meek are to inherit the earth: for that inheritance they have already to learn to use, and not abuse, what they find upon it. Surely, then, we cannot too vigorously set ourselves to view everything we have to do in a

religious light-in a church light as opposed to a worldly light. The Church of Christ, as we understand it, is composed of those who are "children of God by faith in Christ Jesus," with their one absolute Head and Lord Christ, with one infallible Word of Truth, one perfect law, conveyed to the heart by the operation of the Holy Ghost. In this body the heart, as well as the head, has its action; in the judgment given there is the best human feeling acting in the clearest light. May the Spirit of the living God help us, that in our meditations we may come to right conclusions, and be found in His safe conduct!

I have selected two highly illustrative passages from the narrative of the Exodus, because that enshrines teaching adapted to help us on our pilgrimage to heaven.

The first thing to be noticed here is a great inequality amongst the Israelites themselves. Moses and Aaron are saluted by the rest of the people as men in authority. They have been to Pharaoh, and certain changes have come about; they are becoming, with election or without, by their own power or by some other power, the executive of Israel; and now say the people, A
