WITH the Fourth Presbyterian Church, origi nally the First Associate Church, Mr. Stuart connected himself immediately on his arrival in New-York, in the spring of 1833. His name was enrolled in its list of members in October, 1840. Since that time, he has been, without interruption, engaged in active service as a Trustee, and during many years as Treasurer. To his wise counsels, judicious management, urbanity of demeanor, and generous liberality, the Church is largely indebted for its continued prosperity, and for its present commanding position among the churches of the city of New-York. By young and by old in the Church, Mr. Stuart was not only held in high esteem-he was looked up to as a father, and was loved. His sudden departure from amongst us is to all who knew him a heavy and sorrowful bereavement. We bow down under the sovereign Power that has laid |
