PREFACE

THE object of this Book is to supply an interesting Reading Book for Boys in the Lower and Middle Forms of our Public Schools, and in this respect I intend it as a Companion to my 'Reges et Heroes.' It would, however, naturally begin to be used rather lower in School, as soon as boys are well out of their Delectus, Collis's Pons Latinus,' or Jacob's Latin Reader,' as the case may be.

I am confirmed in my view of the desirability of both books by the opinion of many experienced Masters, to whom I have submitted my plan. In fact, I think that to most Teachers the plan commends itself, for the reasons which I have already given in my Preface to the Greek Book. It only remains for me to say a word concerning the Tales which I here offer to the Public.

They are taken exclusively from the first Five Books of Livy's History.' I have chosen this period, partly for the great beauty and familiarity of the Stories themselves, and partly because the narrative admits, without any injury, of being represented in a series of Tales. The Tales are the History of Early Rome;
