it eloquently describes. The book is presented to the public in a style of execution worthy of its character and merits. Stringer & Townsend.

THE RUSSIAN SHORES OF THE BLACK SEA. By L. Oliphant. Facing the title page is a map showing the author's route. This adds much to the reader's interest. The descriptions of the Black Sea and the Danube will be read with fresh interest, since the war has assumed such a serious aspect. The author evidently is a close observer of men and things. His style is lively, and his book contains an amount of information worth ten times its price. Redfield.

VARA, or the Child of Adoption. The author evidently possesses a fine taste and a lively imagination. The subjects are varied, and of practical interest. The book is well calculated withal to correct sour tempers, and show how excellent is goodness. The impressions left on the mind are calculated to make the heart better. The book is neatly printed, and bound in the usually fine style of the enterprising publishers, R Carter & Brothers.

EMBLEMS, DIVINE AND MORAL. By Francis Quarles. A singular, yet interesting book; full of quaint pictures, illustrating some moral truth, and calculated to leave an abiding impression. Its author, who lived in the time of Charles I., "was a man of spiritual wit." Many marks of it are found in this curious book. R. Carter & Brothers.

SPIRIT MANIFESTATIONS Examined and Explained. By J. B. Dods. This book is designed as a refutation of Judge Edmonds' work. It is a calm, dispassionate, truthful argument against spiritual manifestations, consisting of a series of lectures. The author often manifests great ingenuity and skill in the management of his case. Dewitt & Davenport.

ROMANTIC INCIDENTS IN THE LIVES OF THE QUEENS OF ENGLAND. By J. P. Smith, Esq. A very racy and instructive book. It contains a vast amount of useful knowledge besides the interesting facts immediately connected with the subject. The history of women is the history of civilization. This truth is especially prominent in this admirable book. Garrett & Co.

DASHES OF AMERICAN HUMOR. By Howard Paul. The title of this book is its best description. The reader finds himself excited mirthfully, and the hours of perusal pass away like a pleasing dream. Garrett & Co.

TURKEY AND THE TURKS, and a Cruise in the Black Sea. By Adolphus Slade, Admiral of the Turkish Fleet. A wellwritten work, lively in its style and minute in detail, descending into those particulars which give us an insight into Turkish character and Mohammedan customs. Taylor & Co.

Wm.

SPRING BLOSSOMS FROM A DISTANT ISLE. This is a neat little volume on a variety of subjects, written by a child between the ages of six and fifteen years. They are short and pithy. Some of the poems are very pretty. Boston: Ide & Dutton.

A FINE MAP of the Seat of War has just been published by Ide & Dutton, Boston.

THE PASTOR'S WIFE: a memoir of Mrs. Martha Sherman. By Rev. James Sherman. A highly instructive and devotional work. It shows the power of true piety in an important sphere. Let every pastor's wife read it, and she will learn lessons of wisdom that render her more useful in the centre of influence which she occupies. It is truly an evangelical work. American Tract Society.

WORSHIP AT WORK. A discourse occasioned by the death of the late Garrat Noel Bleecker, of New York. By Rev. W. R. Williams, D.D. The leading idea of this excellent little book is industry connected with religion. American Tract Society.

PAMPHLETS AND PERIODICALS.

THE ECLECTIC MAGAZINE OF FOREIGN LITERATURE is rich in choice selected articles, important to every profession. The splendid mezzotint engravings are alone worth the price of the work, which makes three large volumes in a year.

PUTNAM'S MAGAZINE is one of the best of its kind. Its wellearned reputation is well sustained, and it is deservedly and increasingly popular. The April number is one of the richest that has been published.

HARPER'S MONTHLY still maintains its high rank and character so long established, and shines as a star of the first magnitude in a constellation of magazines. Its circulation is steadily increasing.

THE NATIONAL PREACHER for May is out, and contains two excellent sermons; one on the Sin of consulting with Familiar Spirits, by Rev. Enoch Pond, D.D., the other on the Triumphs of Faith in the Preacher, by Rev. E. Cutler.

THE MINING MAGAZINE. Devoted to Mines, Mining Operations, Metallurgy, &c. Published monthly, at Five Dollars per annum, payable in advance, by Wm. J. Tenney, 142 Fulton street, New York.

We have carefully examined several numbers of the above-named Magazine, and, in our view, it is by far the ablest work of the kind in this country. It takes in its scope the whole mining interests of the United States, and a synopsis of all interesting information touching those interests in foreign countries. To the miner, the scientific geologist, or persons any way concerned in developing our vast mineral resources, we would cordially commend the work.

THE NATIONAL MAGAZINE is filled with choice articles of importance, highly useful as permanent literature. It is distinguished for its remarkably clear type and well-executed cuts.
