COMPILED for THE WORLD ALMANAC from the latest oflicial reports. The Militia law of January 21, 1903, provides: "That the mililia shall consist of every ablebodied male citizen of the respective States
and shall be divided into two classes-the organized militia, to be known as the National Guard
or by such other designationis as may be given them by the laws of the respective States or Territories, and the remainder to be known as the reserve militia.'

Alaska has no inilitia, though provision is made for such if need arises. Guam and Samoa each has a small provisional forre used in te for polic purposes thau for military. The Philippines have a constabulary force which can be used either for police or w purposes, provided the latter is on the islan.ls. Porto Rico has a pro visional regiment of 8 companies of infantry which is attached to the army, 700 foot and 100 mounted men, 100 non-commingbet officers, and 26 otticers, the wbole uuder command of u lieutenant-colonel of the United Stales Anny. The reserve militia in the Southern States is assumed to include begrors capable of beariog arms.
THE Nitral Militia is no organized in sixteen States and the District of Columbia, as follows:

THE XAVY. The active list of the Navy comprises 1,785 commissioned and 453 warrant officers on the active list, and 611 commissioned and 76 warrant officers on the retired list. The enlisted strength allowed by law is 38,500 men and apprentice seamen.
MARIXE CORPS. The United States Marine Corps consists of a force of 311 officers and 6,000 men. BrigadierGeneral George P. Elliott is commandant.
The origin of the Navy Department may he said to date from October 13. 1775, when Congress authorized the equipment of two cruisers, mounting respectively 10 and 1 guns. Before the end of that year 15 inore vessels of from 20 to 30 guns were authorized. Thenfairs of the Navy were at that time entrusted to a "Marine Committee.!! In 1798 the present department was formally created, and Benjamin Stoddart appointed the first Seeretary.
