Finally, civilization like everything else cannot stand still: non progredi est regredi; not to go onward is to go backward; and therefore it is that the Holy Father, when he condemned in the syllabus the proposition, "that the Roman Pontiff can and ought to reconcile and adjust himself to progress, liberalism, and modern civilization," condemned a great error, and proclaimed a great truth. There is no hope for either man or society, but to go back to the feet of the only true legislator, who said, “Come unto Me: take My yoke upon you; for My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

This page is noticeable for its ornamentation, which is of consummate grace and variety in design. The great medieval doctrine of the Sacrament is the subject of the miniature; we see a chalice supported by angels, under a canopy, whose curtains two angels hold apart. The cover of the cup is formed to represent the wound in the side of Christ, from which blood is dripping. Round the border is one of those hunting scenes which medieval artists loved to introduce even in a religious composition. This mixture of the sacred and profane was characteristic of the period, and when it took the form of combining the ludicrous and the horrible it was called the grotesque, a style of art originating in the centuries between the destruction of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance. This book is one of those issued by Simon Vostre at Paris about 1499.
