§ 17. ἑκασταχόσε] 'those who professed to know the route that led in each of the above directions'. In the sentence which commences with the words τούτους γὰρ διελθόντας, the nominative to ἔφασαν will be the captives (oi èaλwкótes) mentioned above, while roúrous will refer to the Greeks.
