BATAILLE D'USHANT.

UN combat naval eut lieu le premier juin 1794, entre les flottes française et anglaise sur l'Océan Atlantique, près d'Ushant; cette action fut une de celles qui rendirent vains les efforts de plusieurs entreprises militaires désastreuses formées contre l'Angleterre, et qui par cela même assurèrent la supériorité des forces maritimes de la Grande-Bretagne.

Ce grand tableau, composé avec esprit et peint avec soin, fut exécuté quelque temps après la bataille qu'il rappelle. Il a éprouvé plusieurs déplacemens remarquables; mis d'abord dans une vente avec un autre tableau de grande dimension du même artiste, il fut acheté par un marchand de Liverpool 130 livres sterling (3250 fr. ); il passa ensuite entre plusieurs mains, puis devint la propriété du gouvernement, et et trouva enfin une place digne de lui dans une des salles du palais de St.-James à Londres. Il a été très-bien gravé par J. Fittler.

BATTLE OFF USHANT.

THE annexed subject represents the action between the French and English Fleets in the Atlantic Ocean off Ushant on the first of June, 1794; the first of a series of naval triumphs which counterbalanced the effects of many ill-concerted and disastrous military enterprises, and eventually assured to Great Britain her maritime superiority.

This large and spirited picture is composed and painted with great judgment; it was executed soon after the transaction it records, and has suffered some remarkable vicissitudes, having been at one time disposed of in an auction, together with another large painting by Loutherbourg, to a picture dealer of Liverpool for 130 l.; after passing through several other hands it at length became the property of Government, and found a worthy and appropriate resting place in one of the state apartments of St. James's Palace. It has been very successfully engraved by J. Fittler.
