be believed that his Soul was not left in Hell, neither did his Flesh see Corruption.

Of the Resurrection of Christ.

Christ did truly rise again from Death, and took again his Body, with Flesh and Bones; and ascended into Heaven; and there sitteth at the right Hand of God; and he will come again to judge all Men at the last Day.

5. Of the Sufficiency of the Holy Scriptures for Salvation.

Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to Salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may he proved thereby, is not to be required of any Man, that it should be believed as an Article of Faith, or be thought requisite to Salvation. In the name of the Holy Scripture we do understand those Canonical Books of the Old and New Testament, whose authority has been well established in the Church.

Of the Names and Number of the Canonical Books of the Old Testament.

Genesis,

Exodus,

Leviticus,

Deuteronomy,

Joshua,

Judges,
Ruth,

The first Book of Samuel,
The second Book of Samuel,
The first Book of Kings,
The second Book of Kings,

The first Book of Chronicles,
The second Book of Chronicles
The Book of Ezra,
The Book of Nehemiah,
The Book of Esther,
The Book of Job,
The Psalms,
The Proverbs,
Ecclesiastes, or Preacher,
Cantica, or Songs of Solomon
Four Prophets the Greater,
Twelve Prophets the Less,

And the other Books the Church doth read for

example of Life, and instruction of Manners; but yet doth not apply them to establish any Doctrine: such are these following:

The first Book of Esdras,
The second Book of Esdras,
The Book of Tobias,
The Book of Judith,
The Rest of the Book of Esther
The Book of Wisdom,
Jesus the Son of Sirach,

Baruch the Prophet,
The Song of the three Children
The Story of Susanna,
Of Bell and the Dragon,
The Prayer of Manasses,
The 1st Book of Maccabees,
The 2d Book of Maccabees,

All the Books of the New Testament, as they are commonly received, we do receive, and count them Canonical.

6. Of the Old Testament.

No alteration is requisite in the Article on this subject.

7. Of the two Creeds,

The two Creeds, Nicene Creed, and that which is commonly called the Apostle's Creed, ought throughly to be received and believed; for they may be proved by most certain warrants of Scripture.

8. Of Original or Birth Sin.

Original Sin standeth not in the following of Adam ; but it is the Fault and Corruption of the Nature of every Man, that naturally is engendered of the offspring of Adam, whereby Man is very far gone from original Righteousness, and is of his own Nature inclined to Evil, so that the Flesh lusteth against the Spirit; and therefore in every Person born into this World, it deserveth God's Wrath and Damnation. And this Infection of Nature doth remain; yea, in them that are regenerated; so that the Law in their Members warreth against the Law of their Mind, and bringeth them into captivity to the Law

of Sin, which is in their Members. Although there is no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk after the Spirit; yet if we live after the Flesh, we shall die.

9. Of Free Will.

The Words of this Article need not be altered.

10. Of Faith and Works.

Instead of the two Articles on Justification and good Works, I have formed one Article, which comprehends both subjects; and as Faith and Works are generally kept distinct in controversial writings without reason, I have thought it right to join them; since they are intimately connected in Scripture, and both are to be attended to in working out our Salvation.

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be condemned. Without faith it is impossible to please God. By Grace we are saved through Faith; and that not of ourselves; it is the gift of God: not of Works, lest any Man should boast. But wilt thou know, O vain Man, that Faith without Works is dead; for without Holiness no Man shall see God. To do good and to distribute forget not, for with such Sacrifices God is well pleased. Though, says St. Paul," I have all Faith, so that I could remove Mountains, and have not Charity, I am nothing."

11. Of Works before Justification.

Works done before the Grace of Christ, and the Inspiration of his Spirit, are not pleasant to God, forasmuch as they spring not of Faith in Jesus Christ; yea, rather, for that they are not done as God hath willed and

conimanded them to be done, we doubt not but they have

the Natnre of Sin.

12. Of Works of Supererogation.

No correction is wanted in this Article.

13. Of Christ alone without Sin.

14. Of Sin after Baptism.

These two Articles may remain unchanged.

15. Of Eternal Life.

The Article of Predestination is by some, I believe reckoned rather calvinistical, to take away that charge from our Articles, and to express the Doctrine of the Bible, I have chosen in this place texts of Scriptures only, and have taken a different title.

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; and whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us, and is the propitiation for our Sins, and not for ours only, but also for the Sins of the whole World. The Lord hath no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, but willeth that all men should be saved, and come to the knowledge of the Truth. By the Righteousness of one the Free Gift came upon all men 'for Justification of Life. He that soweth to the Flesh shall of the Flesh reap corruption, but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap Life Everlasting for God will render to every man according to his Deeds; to them, who by patient continuance in well doing seek for Glory and Honour and Immortality, Eternal Life: but unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the Truth, but obey Unrighteousness, Indignation and Wrath, Tribulation and An

guish upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; but Glory, Honour and Peace to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: for there is no respect of Persons with God.

16. Of obtaining Eternal Salvation only by the Name of Christ.

I prefer beginning this Article thus: "they are ignorant of God's Righteousness, who presume to say, &c."

17. Of the Church.

The last sentence, "as the Church of Jerusalem, &c." may as well be omitted.

18. Of the Authority of the Church.

This Article appears to be correct.

19. Of the Authority of General Councils. This Article also may remain unchanged.

20. Of Purgatory.

The Doctrine concerning Purgatory, Pardons, Worshipping and Adoration of Images and Reliques, and the Invocation of Saints is repugnant to the word of God.

21. Of Ministering in the Congregation.

It is not lawful for any Man to take upon him the Office of public Preaching, or ministering the Sacraments in the Congregation, before he be lawfully ordained to execute the same: And those we ought to judge lawfully ordained, which be chosen to this work by Men who have public Authority given unto them, to ordain Ministers in the Church.
