HE Untion of Jesus as the Meffiah or

Chrift, and the Offices he was invested with by Virtue of that Unction, are the Subjects to which I have already bespoke your Attention. His Prophetick Office, which



was the first he was to perform ; I have al-SERM. ready explained ; and have thewed that he was not only a Prophet, in the general Aca çeptation of the Word, but also that he was that one, peculiar Prophet which Mofes fore, told, the Lord should in Time raise up to the Jews, from among their Brethren, like unto bimself.

The next Office that comes in order to be {poke to, is his Sacerdotal or Priestly one ; For this also he most necessarily perform, or he could not be the Christ. The Predictions that are contained in the Old Testament concerning himself, foretelling no less clearly that he should be a Priest, than that he should be a Prophet. For thus speaketh the Lord of Hosts (by his Prophet Zech.) saying, Behold the Man whose Name is the Branch; and be Mall grow up out of his Place, and he Mall build the Temple of the Lord: even be sball build the Temple of the Lord, and he shall bear the Glory, and fall fit and rule upon his Throne ; and he shall be a Priest upon his Throne, and the Counsel of Peace shall be between them both, Zech, vi. 12, 13. i. e. The Mefias, (who, according to the Promise of God, was to be a peculiar Branch or Offspring from David's Lineage or Stock) should build up


SERM. a spiritual Temple, the Church, in which he

should reign as a King, and at the same Time officiate as a Priest : For the Kingdom and the Priesthood being in him both joined in one Person, there shall be no clashing of Jurisdiction between the two Offices. Of the fame Person it is that David says, prophetically, The Lord bath sworn and will not repent, Thou art a Priest for ever, after the Order of Melchisedeck, Pf. cx. 4. And at the same Office both Isaiah and Daniel evidently point, when the former mentions his bearing the Sins of many, and his making Intercession for the Transgreffors, Isai. liii. 12. and the other, his making Reconciliation for Iniquity, Dan. ix. 24. From the Nature of which Performances, his Sacerdotal Office must necessarily be inferred. Since therefore it is evident that the Christ was to be a Priest, I must now, in order to Thew that Jesus is the Chrift, go on to thew that Jesus is a Priest.

And in doing this, I have the Sacred Author of my Text to support me. For in the Passage which I have read to you (which is one and the fame Sentence, though separated by three Verses which I shall have no Occafion to speak to) he first recites the principal Office of the High Priest amongst the Jews;

This is the Subject, and this the Text which the Course I am engaged in directs me to speak to: A Subject of the greatest Impora tance and Concern to all Mankind; I would therefore lay the true Notion of, it before you, in as clear and intelligible a Manner as

And the best way to do it I apprehend is this, viz.

I can.

I. FIRST, to Thew what was the Nature and Office of the High Priesthood amongst the Jews : And then

II. SECONDLY, to explain how Jesus, as the Mesab or Christ, did assume, and perform and finish all which that Priesthood prefigured.

I. FIRST, I would lay before you the Nature and Office of the High Priesthood amongst the Jews. In order to which it will be proper to observe in the first Place, what the Holy Penman of the Epistle before us Vol. II.





SER M. himself remarks, viz. That every High Pries

taken from among Men, is ordained for Men in Things pertaining to God: So that he was a Mediator betweer. God and Man: In fome Cases representing the and in some the other. In Prayers and Praises, he was the Mouth of the People; their Petitions and Thanksgivings being all offered up to God by him. But in Absolutions and Blessings he was the Representative of God, pronouncing with, Authority, as from God's Mouth, and in God's Stead. And thus far he was not fingular in his Priesthood: All Priests whatsoever, whether Patriarchal, Jewish, or Christian, having ever performed the fame Offices, and stood in the fame Relation between God and their People.

But you must remember that under the Jewish Dispensation, (which was all typical, i. e. shadowing and representing, by some Rites and Ceremonies, what was in Time to be performed by some great Antitype, for the Salvation of Mankind, under that Oeconomy) the Priests not only rendered the Calves of their Lips, but had material Sacrifices also to offer. . For every High Priest taken from among Men, was ordained for Men in Things pertaining to God; that be might offer both
