Ir will be a sufficient apology for the appearance of a second volume of Payson's Sermons, to state, that it is demanded by both the voice and the wants of the Christian community. The interest and benefit with which its predecessor has been read in families and social meetings, the favor which has been awarded to it by Christian reviewers, and above all the existing state of religious feeling in our country, have prepared for it, it is believed, something more than a welcome reception. It will be sought with avidity, and received as a precious and most seasonable gift. Few men have had a more minute acquaintance with the workings of the human heart, than Dr. Payson, or have more skilfully applied the truths appropriate to its various states. Some of the most interesting and critical states of mind, in which a human being is ever seen, will be found to be recognized and faithfully and judiciously treated in several of the following discourses. In others will be found a remarkable adaptedness of subjects to the circumstances of churches in their collective capacity; in
