ACCIDENTAL DEATHS BY STATES, 1939 Note by the National Safety Council-Calculated from U. S. Census Bureau data, except for 1939 and 1940. The 1939 totals of all accidental deaths, motor vehicle deaths and railroad deaths are Census Bureau totals. Other 1939 figures are National Safety Council estimates based on Census Bureau data. National Safety Council Data All 1940 figures are National Safety Council estimates. This table shows the eight types of accidental deaths that have occurred most frequently in re: cent years. Occasionally there is a large total of excessive heat fatalities (in 1936 there were 4,678), but usually this type of accidental death is only of secondary importance. From 1930 on, the figures for falls, burns, drowning, and absorption of poisonous gas was not entirely comparable with figures for earlier years due to change in the U. S. Census Bureau's methods of classification, In 1930 these changes increased fatal falls 15 per cent, burns 7 per cent, drowings, I per cent, and absorption of poisonous gas 5 per cent. Also, from 1930 on, some deaths in the motor vehicle and railroad classification are duplicated in the other classifications. Deaths from Collisions Deaths from collisions of railroad trains and motor vehicles are included under both headings in order that each one may appear in proper perspective Figures for burns include conflagrations. Note: Ages of Army males are 18 to 64; of U. S. males, 20 to 64. U. S. males 20 to 64 were estimated to be 38,514,000 on July 1, 1939.
