JOHN IN PRISON.

ESUS was about thirty years of age when he left Nazareth and began His public ministry as the Saviour

of men. John the Baptist was at that time preaching in the wilderness, and baptizing people in the river Jordan. Jesus went to him and was baptized. And John bare witness that Jesus was the Lamb of God.

Another Herod ruled at this time over the land of Galilee. He was also a bad man. John boldly reproved him for his sin, and he shut up John in prison. There, in his damp and dark dungeon, he heard of the wonderful works that were being wrought by Jesus Christ.

One day, John was very sad. So calling two of his disciples, he sent them to Jesus, to ask Jesus if He were really the Messiah that was to come?

Jesus knew how sad and weak John must have been; and told his messengers to inform him of the gracious works of

healing and mercy that Jesus was doing every day-works which had been foretold that the Messiah should do!

Then Jesus spoke to the people about John, and said that of all the men that had been born, none was greater than he.

John never regained his liberty on earth, for shortly afterwards Herod sent and had him beheaded. Then he went to be with God, all his sorrow and suffering being over,

JESUS AND THE WOMAN OF

SAMARIA.

NE day Jesus was on a journey from
Jerusalem to Galilee, and was walk-

ing through Samaria. The weather was hot, and when Jesus reached Jacob's well at Sychar, He was very tired and thirsty. So He sat on the well to rest.

Presently a woman came to the well to draw water, and although it was contrary to custom for a Jew to speak to a Samaritan, Jesus asked her to give Him a drink of water. The woman was surprised, and enquired how it was that He being a Jew should condescend to ask a favour of a woman that was a Samaritan ?

Then ensued a a very important talk between Jesus and the woman. Jesus told her that He could give her the living water that would quench all the longings of her thirsty soul. He also told her that "God is a spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth."

The woman believed Jesus, and went away to the city, saying

“Come, see a man which told me all things that ever I did; is not this the Christ?
