I have the honor to report that the appropriations in these several cases, under the law aforesaid, are as follows, namely:

And by the last accounts of the agent, up to September 30, 1855, there had been expended

The unexpended balances at the close of the third quarter of 1855, in reference to these several places, was

The greater part of which, it is supposed, yet remains unexpended, but of this I cannot speak positively, as the accounts of the agent to a later period have not been received. But as all was in his hands, and liable to expenditure, no doubt the unexpended balances are less

now than those stated.

It may be proper to remark, that as the law in relation to Milwaukie, by a Senate amendment, directed the whole amount appropriated to be expended at the "north cut," no part of it has been expended upon the dilapidated and unfinished work formerly done there." The plans for the works at the several places have been duly reported.

Respectfully, sir, your obedient servant,

J. J. ABERT,

Colonel Corps Topographical Engineers.

Hon. JEFFERSON DAVIS,

Secretary of War.

A resolution of the Senate, of the 3d instant, calling for information relative to the printing done under the direction of that bureau during the year 1855.

MARCH 6, 1856.-Ordered to lie on the table and be printed.

ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE, March 4, 1856. SIR: In reply to the resolution of the Senate of the 3d instant, calling for a statement of any and all sums of money which have been paid or agreed to be paid for printing, in each of the several executive departments during the calendar year ending December 31, 1855, which has not been executed under the provisions of the act of August 26, 1852, I have the honor to report:

In general, the court brief, or other printing required in the business of this department, has been executed under the provisions of the act of August 26, 1852. To that effect are my standing directions on the subject.

I find, on inquiry, that the only exception to this which has occurred, is in the case of one small job, amounting to ten dollars, the account of which is annexed.

The clerk, who had this done, is not now employed in the office. I presume he applied to a private printer in this case, under some urgency which admitted of no delay. If the fact was known to me at the time, the circumstances have wholly passed from my memory.

I am, very respectfully,

Hon. JESSE D. BRIGHT,

President of the Senate.

Č. CUSHING.
