Letter to the

HIS Night have an Acceunt from The Lord Bp. Durham, That the Prayers against of Durham's Tumults are receiv'd and diftributed among Dean of that the Clergy of my Diacefs; I question not but Church. you have taken Special Care that they may be read in the Cathedral, as well as in other Places. My Attendance in Parliament this Year, till it was too late to take fo long a Journey as Durham, and the fhort Adjourn ments; and, indeed, my great Age, made me not venture any farther into the Country than this Place, that I may be within Call when required. But fince my being here, the Sicknes and Death of my dearest Wife, with which it has pleas'd God to afflict me, does not a little indifpofe me for Bufinefs However, I think it will be neceffary that you should immediately Jummon a Chapter, and acquaint them, That I enjoin them to declare upon all Occafions, their Abhorrence of fuch tumultuous and rebellious Proceedings as have lately been in Northumberland. I hear that Newcastle and Berwick, Places of great Confequence, and both in my Diocefs, have been very active for our Conflitution. My Authority, you know, is very much i ffen'd fince the Command of the Militia of the Country is put into other Hands, but I am glad to hear the High-Sheriff has appear'd fo zealous with his Polle, to keep all Things quiet there. My Advice therefore, and my Injunction to my Clergy, is, That they fhould preach up Loyalty to his Majesty King George, and fir up their Congregations to a Deteftation of Popery and Rebellion, and to oppofe the Pretender and his Adherents. I de
