THE PRESIDENT of THE UNITED STATES,

(In compliance with resolutions of the Senate,)

Copies of the correspondence between the government of the United States
and that of Great Britain, on the subject of the right of search ; with
copies of the protest of the American minister at Paris against the
quintuple treaty, and the correspondence relating thereto. .*

To the Senate of the United States :
In answer to the resolutions of the Senate of the 10th, 11th, and 22d

of April last, I communicate herewith a report from the Secretary of State,

accompanied with the “correspondence between the government of the

United States and that of Great Britain in the years 1840, 1841, 1842 and

1843, respecting the right or practice of visiting or searching merchant
vessels in time of peace;” and, also, “the protest addressed by the min-
ister of the United States at Paris, in the year 1842, against the concur-
rence of France in the quintuple treaty, together with all correspondence

relating thereto.”

DEPARTMENT of STATE, Washington, June 5, 1846. The Secretary of State, to whom have been referred the resolutions of the Senate of the 10th, 11th, and 22d of April iast, requesting the President to communicate to that body, if not incompatible with the public interest, “all correspondence between the government of the United States and that of Great Britain, in the years 1840, 1841, 1842 and 1843, respecting the right or practice of visiting or searching merchant vessels in time of peace;” and, also, “the protest addressed by the minister of the United States at Paris, in the year 1842, against the concurrence of France in the quintuple treaty, together with all correspondence relating thereto,” has the honor of reporting to the President the accompanying copies of papers, Respectfully submitted.
