* A Pension having been granted from Naval Funds in lieu of this Gratuity, 371. 8s. 2d. has been recovered and credited to Sub-Head E. in 1905-6, and the balance will be brought to account in the subsequent year.

The Surplus of 12,3771. 5s. ld., shown on the Account of the Vote “Superannuation and Retired Allowances," for the year ended 31st March 1905, has been surrendered.

Extra- 1. The Extra-Statutory Gratuities under Sub-Head C., noted in a Statement appended Statutory to the Account, are similar to those noticed in previous years as awarded on the ground Gratuities of compulsory retirement, and as being in addition to the Pension to which the Officers

were entitled under the provisions of the Superannuation Acts.

A.—The mortality among the Pensioners was greater than anticipated.
