They have been serviceable to me for another reason: They have Often compelled me to question my own traditional beliefs and to find a reason which I could give to another for a hope which had not been founded on reason, but on an inherited habit of mind. That I have clearer and more definite conceptions of both theological and spirit al problems, yes, and of ethical problems also, is largely due to the service which these correspondents have rendered by compelling me to investigate the questions which they have addressed to me.
