hour, and found others standing idle, and saith to them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? 7. They say to him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatever is right, ye shall receive.

8. So at even, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last to the first.

9. And when they that were hired about the eleventh hour came, every man received a penny. (7d.) 10. But when the first came, they expected to receive more; but they likewise received every man a penny. 11. And having received it, they murmured against the householder. 12. Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13. But he answered, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny? 14. Take what is given, and be content, (that the Gentiles become the Christian church first, and have the same gospel privileges with you, the Jews, who have been his church of old, and borne the yoke of the ceremonial law.) 15. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil because I am good?

16. So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many are called, but few chosen.

17. Then Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said to them, 18. Lo, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests, and to the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death; 19. And deliver him to the Gentiles, to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify; but the third day he shall rise again.

20. Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children, with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring something of him.

21. Then he said to her, what desirest thou?

1

She saith to him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.

22. But Jesus replied, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink, and to be baptized with the same baptism wherewith I am baptized? They replied, We are able.

23. Then he saith to them, Ye shall indeed suffer persecution and martyrdom; and so have a bloody baptism: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, I cannot give, except to those for whom the Father hath prepared it.

24. When the ten heard this, they had indignation at the two brethren.

25. But Jesus calling them to him, said, Ye know the rulers of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and their great ones exercise authority upon them. 26. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you, let him be your minister; 27. And whoever would be chief, let him be your servant: 28. Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for

many.

29. Now as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

30. And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, having heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David, (his type as king.)

31. And the multitudes rebuked them that they might be silent: but they cried the more, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.

32. But Jesus stood still, and calling them, said, What would ye have me to do for you? ss. They 33. say to him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. 34. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes; and immediately they received sight, and followed him.

CHAP. XXI.

CHRIST RIDETH INTO JERUSALEM.

Now approaching Jerusalem, being come to Bethphage, at the mount of Olives, then Jesus'sent two disciples, 2. Saying to them, Go into the village opposite you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, with a colt, loose them, and bring them to me. 3. And if any man say ought to you, say ye, The Lord hath need of them; and immediately he will send them.

4. All this was done, that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, 5. Tell the inhabitants of Zion, Behold, thy King cometh to thee, meek, and riding on an ass, even a colt, the foal of an ass,. Zech. ix. 9.

6. So the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them. 7. They brought the ass with the colt, and put on it their mantles, and set him on it.

8. And a very great multitude spread their gar ments by the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them by the way.

9. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna, (save, I pray!) AH hail to the son of David! (the heir to his throne). Blessed is he that cometh in the Lord's name! Hosanna in the highest!

10. And being come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? 11. And the mul titude said, This is the prophet Jesus of Nazareth, of Galilee.

12. Then Jesus went to the temple of God, and drove out all that sold and bought in the court of the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seats of them that sold doves, 13. Saying to them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer, (Isaiah lvi. 7.) but have made it a den of robbers.

14. Then the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

15. But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things he did, and the children crying in the temple, Hosanna to the son of David; they were moved with indignation, 16. And said to him, Hearest thou what they say? Then Jesus saith to them, Yea: have ye never read, Out of the mouth of infants and babes, (the simple and weak), thou hast perfected praise.

17. Then he left them, and went out of the city to Bethany; and lodged there.

18. Now in the morning, returning to the city, he was hungry. 19. And seeing a fig-tree in the way, he came to it, and finding nothing thereon, but leaves only, he said, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforth, for ever. And presently the fig-tree withered away.

20. And the disciples seeing it, wondered, say. ing, How soon is the fig-tree withered away! 21. Jesus replied to them, Verily, I tell you, if ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do what is done to the fig-tree, but even if ye say to this mountain, (or any great difficulty), Be thou removed and cast into the sea, it shall be done. 22. And all things whatever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

23. And being come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things; and who gave thee this authority?

24. And Jesus replied to them, I will also ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. 25. Was the baptism of John from heaven, or of men? 26. Now they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not then

believe him? But if we say, Of men, we fear the people; for all reckon John as a prophet.

27. Then they answered Jesus, saying, We cannot tell. He also said to them, Neither tell I you, by what authority I do these things.

28. But what think ye of this? a certain man had two sons; and coming to the first, he said, Son, go work to-day in my vineyard. 29. He replied, I will not: but afterward he repented and went. And coming to the second, he said likewise. Who replied, I go, sir; yet went not.

30.

31. Which of the two did his father's will? They replied, The first. Jesus saith to them, Verily, I tell you, they that have been publicans and harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. 32. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and harlots believed him; yet when ye had seen it, ye repented not afterwards, that ye might believe him.

33. Hear another parable. A certain householder planted a vineyard, (the Jewish church,) and hedged it about (with his powerful protection), and made a wine press in it, and built a watch-tower, (the temple), and let it out to husbandmen (the Jewish elders and people), and went into a far country (ascended from Sinai).

34. But when the time (of trial for bearing the fruits of righteousness) came, he sent his servants (the prophets) to the husbandmen, to receive the fruits of it.

35. But the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. 36. Again he sent other servants more than the first; and they did to them likewise.

37. But last of all he sent his son (the Messiah), saying, They will reverence my son. 38. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir, (the church's head and king); come, let us kill him, and the inherit
