hands: 7. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of fortitude, and of love, and of wisdom.

8. Therefore, be not ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me a prisoner for his sake, but be partaker of the afflictions of the gospel, according to the power of God; 9. Who saved us, having called us by an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace; given us in Christ Jesus before the world began: 10. But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and thrown light on immortal life by the gospel: 11. Whereof I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

12. For which cause I also suffer these things: yet, I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and I am persuaded he is able to keep that (soul) which I have committed to him against that day.

13. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, with that faith and love which are of Christ Jesus. 14. That good doc trine which was committed to thee keep by the (aids of) the Holy Spirit which dwells in us.

15. Thou knowest, that all in Asia are turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Her mogenes. 16. The Lord give mercy to the house of Önesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; 17. But when he was in Rome he sought me very diligently, and found me. 18. The Lord grant to him, to find mercy from him in that day; and in how many things he ministered to me at Ephesus thou knowest very well.

CHAP. II.

PAUL EXHORTETH TIMOTHY.

Now, my son, be strong in the grace of Christ Jesus. 2. And commit the things thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, to faithful men, able to teach others also.

3. Therefore, endure hardships, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4. No man that warreth entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who chose him to be a soldier. 5. And if a man also strive for victories, yet is he not crowned except he strive according to law. 6. The husbandman must first labour, and then partake of the fruit.

7. Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. 8. Remember Jesus Christ, of the seed of David (his type,) was raised from the dead, according to my gospel; 9. Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil-doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the chosen ones, that they may obtain salvation by Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

10.

11. It is a faithful saying, That if we be dead with him (to the world and sin), we shall also live with him; 12. If we suffer, we shall also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; 13. If we are unfaithful, yet he abideth faithful; he cannot deny himself.

14. Put them in mind of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15. Study to shew thyself approved to God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16. But avoid profane and vain babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. 17. And their words will eat as a

gangrene, of whom is Hymeneus and Philetus; 18. Who have erred concerning the truth, saying, the resurrection is only spiritual and already past, and overthrow the faith of some.

19. Nevertheless the foundation of God stands firm, having this seal, (with a double signature and confirmation,) The Lord approveth them that are his. And, Let every one that calls on the name of Christ depart from iniquity: 20. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonourable uses. 21. If a man, therefore purge himself from these things he shall be a vessel of honour, sanctified, and fit for the master's use, and prepared to every good work.

22. Flee also youthful lusts, but follow righteousness, fidelity, love, peace, towards them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing they beget strifes. 24. And the Lord's servant must not strive; but be gentle to all men, apt to teach, patient, 25. In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God by any means will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26. And that they may awake out of the devil's snare who are taken captive by him at his will.

CHAP. III.

PERILOUS TIMES IN THE LAST DAYS.

KNOW also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2. For men shall be lovers of themselves; lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3. Without natural affection, covenant-breakers, false accusers, intemperate, fierce, haters of good men, 4. Treacherous, rash, haughty, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God; 5. Having a form of godliness, but denying its power; from such turn away.

6. For such creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away by diverse lusts; 7. Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

8. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. 9. But they will not proceed far: for their folly will be manifest to all men, as their's also was.

10. But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, fidelity, long-suffering, love, patience. 11. Persecutions, afflictions, at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; but out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

14. But continue thou in the things thou hast learned, and been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15. And that from a

child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith in Christ Jesus.

16. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, (for conviction) for reproof, (correction,) for instruction in righteous17. That the man of God may be complete thoroughly fitted unto all good works.

CHAP. IV.

PAUL'S CHARGE TO TIMOTHY.

I CHARGE thee, therefore, before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing in his kingdom. 2. Preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; convince, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. 3. For the time will come when they

will not endure sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, they shall heap to themselves teachers, according to their own lusts.

4. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and be turned to fables.

5. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, accomplish thy ministry. 6. For I am now ready to be offered to die, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 8. Hence there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but to all them also that love his appearing.

9. Endeavour diligently to come to me quickly; 10. For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed to Thessalonica, Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia, 11. Luke only is with me. Bring Mark with thee. for he is profitable to me for the ministry. 12. And I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

13. The (Roman) robe that I left at Troas with Carpus, bring with thee when thou comest, and the books, but especially the parchments, (or citizen's charter, to appear before the emperor.)

14. Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil; the Lord will reward him according to his works; 15. Of whom be thou aware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.

16. At my first defence, none was with me, but all forsook me; may it not be laid to their charge. 17. But the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear, and I was delivered out of the mouth of the (lion) man. 18. And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and preserve me to his
