whom ye crucified, both Lord and Christ, (to save and rule his people).

37. Now, hearing this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter, and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? 38. Then Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized each of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39. For the promise is to you and to your offspring, and to all who are afar off (among the Gentiles), even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

40. And with many other words he testified and exhorted, saying, Save yourselves from (the sin and punishment of) this perverse generation.

41. Then they who gladly received his words were baptized; and that day there were added to them about three thousand persons. 42. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship (with the saints), and in receiving the Lord's supper, and in prayers. prayers. 43. And fear came upon every soul; and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44. And all who believed were together, and had all things common; 45. And sold all their possessions and goods, and parted them to all the brethren, as every one needed.

46. And continuing daily with one consent in the temple, and eating in each other's houses, they ate their meat with gladness and singleness of heart; 47. Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

CHAP. III.

PETER CURETH A LAME MAN.

Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.

2. And a certain man, lame from his birth, was

carried, and laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; 3. Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked alms. 4. Then Peter looking stedfastly on him with John, said, Look on us. 5. So he gave heed to them, expecting to receive something of them. 6. Then Peter said, I have no silver and gold; but what I have I give thee-In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise and walk. 7. Then taking him by the right hand, he lifted him up; and immediately his feet and ancle bones received strength. 8. And leaping up, he stood, then walked, yea, entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. 9. So all the people saw him walking and praising God: 10. And they knew it was he who sat for alms at the beautiful gate of the temple, so they were filled with wonder and amazement at what happened to him. 11. Now as the lame man who was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch called Solomon's, greatly wondering.

12. Now Peter seeing it, said to the people, Ye men of Israel, why wonder ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as tho' by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? 13. The God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his son Jesus, whom ye delivered up, and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. 14. Yea, ye denied the holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. 16. And his name, thro' faith therein, hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know; yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. 17. And now, brethren, I know that through ignorance ye did it, as did

also your rulers. 18. But those things which God foretold by all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, are fulfilled.

19. Repent ye, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing (comforts) shall come from the Lord's presence. 20. And he shall send Jesus Christ, who was preached before to you. 21. Whom the heaven must receive till the times of rectifying all things, of which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. 22. For Moses truly said to the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up to you of your brethren, typified by me: to him shall ye hearken in all things whatever he shall say to you. 23. And every one who will not hear that Prophet shall be destroyed from among the people. 24. Yea, and all the prophets, from Samuel forward, whoever spoke thereof, likewise foretold these days. 25. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, Even in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26. God having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to you first, to bless you, by turning away every one of you from his ini quities.

CHAP. IV.

PETER AND JOHN IMPRISONED.

BUT as they spake to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2. Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached thro' Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3. So they seized them, and put them into custody till the next day; for it was now evening.

4. However many who heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.

5. ¶ And on the morrow, their rulers, and elders, and scribes, 6. With Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and whoever were of the high priest's kindred, were gathered at Jerusalem. 7. And having set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name (and authority) have ye done this?

8. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, 9. If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the infirm man, by what means he is made whole; 10. Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him this man stands here before you whole. 11. This is the stone rejected by you builders, which is become the head of the corner, (uniting the Jews and Gentiles in one church, Psal. cxviii. 22.) 12. Neither is there salvation by any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we can be saved.

13. Now seeing the boldness of Peter and John, and perceiving that they were unlearned and simple men, they wondered, and acknowledged that they had been with Jesus. 14. And beholding the man who was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 15. But having commanded them to go out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 16. Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. 17. But that it spread no farther among the people, let us strictly threaten them, to speak henceforth to no man in this name.. 18. So they called them, and commanded them not to teach, nor speak at all in the name of Jesus. 19. But Peter and John replied to them, Whether it be

right in God's sight to hearken to you more than to God, judge ye. 20. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

21. So, threatening them also, they let them go, not finding how they could punish them, because of the people; for all men glorified God for what was done. 22. For the man was above forty years old on whom this miracle of healing was done.

23. Now being released, they went to their own company, and told whatever the chief priests and elders said to them. 24. And, those, hearing, raised their voice to God unanimously, saying, O Sovereign Lord, thou art God who madest heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; 25. Who by thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? 26. The kings of the earth stood up, and the rul ers were gathered against the Lord, and his Christ. 27. For truly both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered, 28. To do whatever thy hand suffered, and thy council determined before to be done, against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed. 29. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings; and grant to thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, 30. By stretching forth thine hand to heal; that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.

31. And now having prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spake the word of God with freedom. 32. The multitude also of them that believed were of one heart and soul; nor said any of them that any of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 33. With great power also the apostles gave witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 34. And none of
