36. And the

already to (the gospel) harvest. reaper receives wages, and gathers (spiritual) fruit to life eternal; that both the sower and the reaper may rejoice together: 37. And herein is that saying true, One soweth and another reapeth. 38. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: others laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

39. And many Samaritans of that city believed on him for the woman's saying, who testified, He told me all that ever I did. 40. So when the Samaritans were come to him, they besought him to tarry with them. So he abode there two days.

41. And many more believed because of his own word; 42. And said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying; for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

43. After two days, he went from thence into Galilee; 44. But Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

45. Yet being come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things he did at Jerusalem at the feast; for they also went to the feast.

46. So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And a certain courtier, who had a son sick at Capernaum, Who hearing that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, went to him, and besought him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48. Then said Jesus to him, Except ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe. 49. The courtier saith to him, Sir, come down ere my child die. 50. Jesus saith to him, Depart; thy son liveth. So he believed Jesus' word, and departed.

51. And as he was going down, his servants met him, and told him, Thy son liveth. 52. Then he

asked them the hour wherein he began to amend. And they said, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. 53. So the father knew that Jesus said in the same hour, Thy son liveth. So himself believed, with his whole house.

54. This was the second miracle that Jesus did, when he came out of Judea into Galilee.

CHAP V.

CHRIST HEALETH ON THE SABBATH.

AFTER this there was a feast of the Jews; so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2. Now there is at Jerusalem, by the sheep-gate, a pool, called in Hebrew, Bethesda, (the house of mercy), having five porches. 3. In these lay a great multitude of infirm persons, of blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. 4. For an angel descended at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: then whoever first, after that stepped in, was cured of whatever disease he had.

5. Now a certain man was there, who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6. Jesus seeing him lying, and knowing he had been a long time in that case, saith to him, Desirest thou to be made whole? 7. The infirm man answered, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but, while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8. Jesus saith to him, Rise, take up thy couch, and walk. 9. So being made whole, immediately he took up his couch and walked : and that day was the sabbath.

10. The Jews therefore said to him, who was cured, It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. 11. He answered them, He who made me whole, said to me, Take up thy bed and walk? 12. Then they asked him, What is he who said to thee, Take up thy bed and walk. 13. But he that was healed knew not who he was: for Jesus

had conveyed himself away from the multitude, which was in that place.

14. Afterward, Jesus finding him in the temple, said to him, Behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing befal thee.

15. He departed, and told the Jews it was Jesus who made him whole. 16. Now the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to slay him, for doing these things on the sabbath.

17. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

18. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

19. Then Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I tell you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do; for whatever things he doeth, these also the Son doeth. 20. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth; and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may wonder. 21. For as the Father raiseth the dead, quickening them, even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. 22. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment to the Son; 23. That all may honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father who sent him. 24. Verily, verily, I tell you, He who hearkens to my words, and believes on him that sent me, hath everlasting bliss, and shall not come into condemnation; being passed from death to life. 25. Verily, verily, I tell you, The hour comes, and now is, when the dead (spiritually) shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. 26. For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given to the Son to have life in himself; 27. And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of

man. 28. Wonder not at this; for the hour comes, wherein all in the graves shall hear his voice, 29. And come forth; they that have done good to the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil to the resurrection of condemnation. 30. I can of mine own self do nothing; as I receive I judge; and my judgment is just: because I seek not mine own will, but the Father's will who sent me.

31. If I testify of myself, my testimony is not true. 32. There is another that testifies of me; and I know that the testimony which he testifies of me is true. 33. Ye sent to John, and he bare witness to the truth. 34. But I receive not testimony from man; but these things I say, that ye might be saved. 35. He was a burning and a shining light; and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36. Yet I have a greater testimony than John's, for the works which the Father hath given me to perform, these works that I do bear witness of me, that the Father sent me. 37. And the Father himself, who sent me, hath borne witness to me. Ye have never heard his voice, nor seen his appearance. 38. Nor have ye his word abiding in you; for whom he hath sent, ye believe not.

39. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they testify of me. 40. But ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. 41. I receive not honour from men, 42. But I know you that ye have not the love of God in you. 43. I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not; if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. 44. How can ye believe, who receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour which cometh from God only. 45. Think not I will accuse you to the Father; there is one that accuseth you, even Moses (by his writings) in whom ye trust. 46. For if ye believed Moses ye would believe me; for he wrote of me.

47. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall believe my words?

CHAP. VI.

FIVE THOUSAND MEN MIRACULOUSLY FED.

AFTER these things Jesus went over the sea (or lake) of Galilee, (or Tiberias, or Genesareth).

2. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles he did on the diseased. 3. Then Jesus went up on a mountain, and sat there with his disciples. 4. Now the passover, a feast of the Jews was nigh.

5. ¶ Then Jesus looking up, saw a great multitude coming to him, and saith to Philip, whence shall we buy bread for these to eat? 6. But he said this to try him: for he himself knew what he would do. 7. Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for each to take a little.

8. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith to him, 9. There is a lad here, who hath five barley loaves and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? 10. Then Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So they sat down, in number about five thousand.

11. Then Jesus took the loaves; and having given thanks he gave to the disciples, and they gave to the multitude; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would 12. When they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather up the remains, that nothing be lost. 13. So they gathered them, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, (being much more than at first).

14. Then having seen the miracle Jesus did, they said, This is indeed that prophet who should come into the world.

15. Jesus, therefore, perceiving they would by force make him a king, he departed again to a mountain alone.
