he asked his disciples, Whom say men that I

am?

28. They answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.

29. Then he saith to them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter said, Thou art the Christ. 30. Then he charged them strictly to tell no man of him.

31. Then he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests and scribes, and be killed; and within three days rise again.

32. And he spake these words so plainly, that Peter took him aside, and began to reprove him. 33. And having turned about, and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Go behind me, thou adversary; for thou regardest not the things of God, but of men.

34. And having called the people to him, and his disciples, he said to them, Whoever will come after me, let him deny himself, (all the world's good things), and take up his cross, (suffer all its evils), and follow me. 35. For whoever shall save his life (by avoiding sufferings) shall lose the happiness thereof; but whoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, shall obtain happiness. 36. For what is a man profited, tho' he gain the whole world, if he forfeit his own life? 37. Or what shall a man give in exchange for his life.

38. Whoever, therefore, shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of man shall also be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father, with the holy angels.

CHAP. IX.

CHRIST'S TRANSFIGURATION.

He said also to them, Verily I tell you, There

are some here who shall not die till they see the kingdom of God come with power.

2¶ And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John, up a high mountain privately, and was transfigured before them. 3. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can whiten them. 4. And Elias with Moses appeared to them, talking with Jesus. 5. Then Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, one for Moses, and one for Elias. 6. For he knew not what to say; as they were much afraid.

7. Then a cloud overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.

8. And quickly looking about, they saw none any more, but Jesus with themselves.

9. And coming down from the mountain he charged them to tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. 10. And they kept that saying with themselves, reasoning with one another what the rising from the dead meant.

11. And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? 12. Then he told them, Elias verily cometh first, and endeavours to restore all things. 13. But I tell you, That Elias is come already, as it is written of him, and they have done to him whatever they would; and it is also written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things and be contemned.

14. And coming to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes disputing with them.

15. And immediately all the people, seeing him, were greatly amazed, and, running to him, saluted him.

16. Then he asked the scribes, What dispute ye

about with them? 17. Then one of the multitude said, Master, I brought to thee my son, who hath a dumb spirit; 18. And wherever it seizeth him it dasheth him on the ground, and he foameth and gnasheth his teeth, and pineth away; and I spake to thy disciples to cast it out, but they could not.

19. He answered him, O unbelieving generation! how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? Bring him to me.

20. They did so, and seeing him, straightway the spirit convulsed him; and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming.

21. Then he asked his father, How long is it since this befel him? he replied from childhood. 22. And often it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him; but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help

us.

23. Jesus said to him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

24. Then the child's father cried out, with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

25. And Jesus seeing the people come running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I command thee to come out of him, and enter no more into him.

26. Then the spirit cried, and convulsed him sorely, and came out of him; and he was as one dead, so that many said, He is dead. 27. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifting him up; he

arose.

28. And being come into the house his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29. Then he said to them, Ye cannot cast out this kind without prayer and fasting.

30. Now they departed thence, and passed thro' Galilee; and he would have none to know it. 31. For he taught his disciples, saying, The Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men,

and they shall kill him; and, after that, he shall rise the third day. 32. But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

33. Then he came to Capernaum; and, being in the house, he asked them, About what did ye dispute among yourselves by the way? 34. But they were silent; for by the way they disputed among themselves who should be the greatest.

35. Then he sat down, and calling the twelve, said to them, If any man desire to be first, he must be last of all, and servant of all.

36. Then taking a child, he set him in the midst of them: and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37. Whoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me; and whoever shall receive me, receiveth not me only, but him that sent

me.

38. Then John said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and we forbade him, because he followeth not us.

39. But Jesus said, Forbid him not; for no man who shall do a miracle in my name, can soon speak evil of me. 40. For he who is not against us is for us. 41. For whoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I tell you, he shall not lose his reward. 42. And whoever shall offend one of the meanest that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. 43. And if thy darling desires, dear to thee as thy hand, cause thee to of fend, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into unquenchable fire. 44. Where their conscience is never quiet, and their torments never cease. 45. And if thy foot cause thee to offend, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life lame, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched; 46. Where

their remorse never ceaseth, and their pains never abate. 47. And if thine eye cause thee to offend, pluck it out; it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire; 48. Where their conscience is never quiet, and their torments never abate. 49. For every one shall bear a fiery trial, (to purify, and season, or consume them), as every sacrifice is seasoned with salt. 50. Salt is good, but if it has lost its saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt (sincerity) in yourselves, and have peace with one another.

CHAP. X.

CONCERNING DIVORCE.

Now departing thence, he cometh into the borders of Judea, by the farther side of Jordan; and the people resort to him again: and, as he was wont, he taught them again.

2. Then the Pharisees coming, asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.

3. But he said to them, What did Moses command you? 4. Then they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.

5. But Jesus replied, For the hardness of your heart Moses wrote you this precept, (rather than use her cruelly, or kill her): 6. But at the beginning God made one male and one female. 7. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8. And they two shall be as one flesh; so then they are no more two, but as one flesh. 9. What therefore God hath joined together, let none separate.

10. And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter. 11. He said, Whoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. 12. And if a woman
