right and left, making a very tasteful exhibition of the "white linen" in his open bosom, and under his arms. This was very attracting to a certain class, and with a little spiritualizing, would prove him to be one of "the saints." Then pressing his sides violently, he declared, as with vollies of oaths, that the Holy Ghost was pouring into him in mighty streams. All this was done with such stage effect, and in such a solemn and imposing manner, that those who did not look closely into the subject, were liable to be deceived, and take it for a reality.

Those who believed him divinely sent, were completely over-awed and enraptured. It mattered not how ridiculous and unbecoming his expressions and actions were-it was all the work of the Holy Ghost! Those who were hangers-on upon superstition, and thought it necessary "to get religion," instead of being rationally religious, were startled and filled with amazement. Those again, who had been waiting for an excuse for making a profession of religion to get "absolution" at the hand of a priest, and thereby cover over a multitude of sins, found this a grand opportunity to answer their purposes.

But one thing we must be allowed to say, without meaning to call in question the sincerity of new professors of religion,-viz.

that of all the numerous revivals which we have witnessed for thirty years, we have never seen one, which promised so little good, according to the amount of exertion, as this Burchardistic excitement. If any thing takes place, under the name of religious awakenings, which occasions more evil than good, we soberly believe that it is just such a spasmodic, inquisitorial revival, as has recently cursed Woodstock and its vicinity. Nothing but a devout determination to acquiesce in the measures of divine Providence, could induce us to be thankful; unless, indeed we are thankful that God has spared such a multitude of people, from the damning delusion which J. Burchard brought upon this place. If he was sent of God, it must have been agreeable to 1 Kings xxii, 22, 23, or 2 Thess. ii, 11, 12, which the reader can examine at his leisure.

PART SECOND.

Mr. Burchard's first Discourse-Brief Remarks-Evening Services of the first Day, and Remarks.

MR. BURCHARD'S FIRST SERMON.

TEXT-"I ask, therefore, for what intent ye have sent for me?" Acts x. 29.

AFTER the introduction, the preacher said -I shall make the question my own, and ask you, "for what intent you have sent for me? What do you want of me? or what do you expect that I, a poor feeble piece of clay can do for you ?

Some of you will say, we want you to bring the Spirit of God with you that we may have a revival of religion among us. The church in this place, is now, and has been, for a long time, in a cold and languishing condition; and we want a powerful revival of religion.

That may be true, for I have found it so in other places. Do you think that I can Lring the Holy Spirit of God with me? You want to let out this work by the job then, do you! Well, I can tell you I won't take it. But what do you suppose I can do, alone?

What is there no God, in Woodstock, unless I am here? What a delusion! Why, if there is not a God here, mighty to save, whether I am here or not, you will never have a revival of religion, and sinners will stumble by hundreds, over lifeless churchmembers into eternal perdition.

Another says, we sent for this man that he might rouse us from our slumbers.—wake As a church we have been asleep for years, and we need powerful efforts to wake us up, and make us do our duty.

us up.

What! asleep! and need waking up?— Brother? Sister? Are you a christian? I hope so. What! a christian, and sensible that hundreds and thousands among you are exposed to eternal hell, and yet asleep?— Surprising! Just look at the hundred and thirty-seventh Psalm, and see what constitutes a christian; [reading verses 5 and 6, and applying them to suit him himself.]— Hence, it is impossible for christians to be asleep, and need waking up. Real christians never sleep. They keep their eyes fixed upon "Jerusalem"-the salvation of sinners -and "prefer" it "above their chief joy," Hark! look here,-a mother has a darling child, off five or six miles, and she receives word that her child is very sick, and is suffering extremely. Hark! she sends for a minister to come a great distance and pray

with her. What for? should wake her up!

Why she wants he
She is asleep then,

is she? Ha! what! a mother asleep need and waking up, while her dear child is suffering excruciating pains? Monstrous !!

Again. Another says, we want such a powerful work of the Holy Ghost in this church-such a shaking among the dry bones -as we hear of in other places,-Springfield, Perkinsville, Grafton, Chester, and in the towns round about.

What! send for me to come here, because God Almighty has poured out his spirit in torrents upon other towns? Have a revival to be in fashion? because other churches are blest with revivals? Then you ought to be disappointed; and if you have no better motives, I pray God that your prayers, if you offer any, may not be answered. Hark! look here ; if you want a revival in Woodstock, you must ask God to grant it, to save these perishing, immortal souls from eternal perdition, who are out of the ark of safety. That's what you want a revival for; to save sinners in Woodstock and in the towns round about, from going down to hell. But don't ask for the Holy Spirit, because God showers it down upon other places.

Again. Another says, we sent for this man to help us convert some of the rich, influential neighbors. We want them to join
