into Capernaum, the centurion himself came and be sought Jesus, saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home, sick of the palsy, grievously tormented."

The Centurion's Faith. Then Jesus answered, "I will come and heal him." But the centurion said, "Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldst come under my roof; but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man who understands the power of authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this man, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

His Faith Praised.-When Jesus heard the centu rion's words, He said to the people who followed Him, "Verily, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you that many shall come like this strange centurion, from the east and west, and shall sit down with our fathers, Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven: but the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

His Faith Rewarded.-Then Jesus said to the cen turion, "Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee." And his servant was made well in that very hour.

[blocks in formation]

On the Ship.-One day Jesus went into a boat with His disciples. And He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." So they started to sail

across.

Jesus Asleep. On the way over Jesus went into the back part of the boat, and lay down upon a pillow and fell asleep.

The Storm.--Before they reached the other side of the lake, a great storm blew down upon them. The boat was tossed about on the waves, and began to fill with water. The disciples thought that the boat would sink, and that they would be drowned. So they hurried to the place where Jesus lay sleeping, and awoke Him, crying, "Lord, save us, we perish."

The Disciples' Lack of Faith.-But the disciples ought not to have been afraid of drowning, when Jesus was with them in the boat. Therefore Jesus said to them, "Why are ye afraid, O ye of little faith ?”

Jesus Stills the Storm.-Then Jesus arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still." Aud at once the wind stopped blowing and the sea became calm.

Surprise at Jesus' Power.-When the men who were in the boat saw that Jesus could quiet the wind and the waves with a word, they were filled with awe and wonder. And they said to one another "What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him!"
