Solomon's Choice.-Then Solomon said, "O Lord, my God, Thou hast made me king. Give me an understanding heart to judge Thy people, so that I may discern between good and bad."

God's Gifts. It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. And He said to Solomon, "Because thou hast not asked for long life, nor for riches, nor for the life of thy enemies, but hast asked for understanding, behold I have done as thou hast asked. I have given thee an understanding heart, so that there never was nor shall be a man as wise as thou. I have also given thee

what thou hast not asked, both riches and honor. And if thou wilt keep my commandments, I will give thee long life."

Solomon's Glorious Reign.-Solomon's kingdom was very great. The people from all parts of it brought him presents and served him. He made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it with the best gold. He had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. He also had a great many ships. He had peace with all nations around him. And the people of Judah and Israel dwelt safely under their vines and fig-trees.

Solomon's Wisdom.-God gave Solomon very great wisdom and understanding. He was wisest of all men. He knew about the trees and the plants and the beasts and the birds and the creeping things and the fishes. He spoke three thousand proverbs. The people came from all lands to see and hear him, because they were told about his great wisdom.

The Queen of Sheba.-When the queen of Sheba heard of the wisdom of Solomon, she came to try him. with hard questions. She came to Jerusalem with a very great train of camels bearing spices and gold and precious stones. She presented these to Solomon. She asked him many questions. And Solomon answered them all. When the queen had seen all his wisdom and glory she said, "It was a true report which I heard of thee in my own land. But the half was not told me.'
