THE LESSON STORY.

A Strange Command.-God wanted to try Abraham's faith. So He said to him, "Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and go into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering on one of the mountains."

On the Way.-Then Abraham rose up early in the morning, and prepared to obey. He split some wood for the burnt offering, saddled his ass, took two of his young men and Isaac his son, and went toward the place of which God had told him. On the third day he lifted up his eyes and saw the place afar off.

Isaac's Question.-Abraham said to his young men,

"Stay here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you." Then he took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he himself carried the fire and a knife. Isaac said to his father, "Behold, here are the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" Abraham answered, “My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering."

God Interposes.-When they had come to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar and laid the wood in order upon it. Then he bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. He reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But just then the Angel of the Lord called to him out of heaven, and said, "Abraham, Abraham." And Abraham answered, "Here am I.” Here am I." And the Angel of the Lord said, "Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything to him; for now I know that thou fearest God, because thou has not withheld thy son, thine only son, from Me."

A Ram Sacrificed Instead.

Then Abraham looked

behind him, and saw a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. So he went and took the ram, and offered him up as a burnt offering instead of his son. Thus Abraham obeyed God in offering up his beloved son. And thus God gave him back his son again.
