[blocks in formation]

A Wicked Plan.-As men journeyed from the east they found a plain in the land of Shinar. And they dwelt there. The soil was mostly clay, and the people soon learned to make bricks and to use them for

building houses. After a while they said to one another, "Let us make brick and burn them well. Let us build a city, and a tower whose top shall reach up to heaven. And let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered abroad on the face of the whole earth."

The Tower. So they made bricks and used them instead of stone, and used slime instead of mortar. And they began to build a city, and a tower that they thought should reach to the sky.

God Displeased.-But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which they were building. He was displeased at what they were doing and said, “Behold, the people is one, and they all have one language; let us confound their language so that they may not understand one another's speech."

The Confusion of Tongues.-Then the Lord confounded their language, so that one could not understand what the other said. And they had to stop building. Then the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

Babel. The name of that place was called Babel, because the Lord there confused the tongues of men; for the word Babel means Confusion.

THE LESSON STORY.

The Call.-Abram lived in Haran with his father. One day the Lord said to Abram, "Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee. And I will bless thee, and make of thee a great nation; and I will make thy name great. And in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.”

The Covenant. So Abram departed, as the Lord had told him to do. Lot his brother's son went with him. And Abram took his wife and Lot and all his property, and came into the land of Canaan. There he built an altar unto the Lord and called upon His name. And the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, and said, "Fear not, Abram." And He brought him out, and said, "Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them." And He said unto him,
