chief priests and scribes, and demanded of them where Christ should be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea," because the prophet had said, "And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a governor, that shall rule My people Israel."

Sent to Bethlehem.-Then Herod called the wise men aside, and asked them how long it was since they had first seen the star. When he had found out, he sent them to Bethlehem, and said to them, "Go and search diligently for the young child, and when you have found Him, come and tell me that I may go and worship Him also."

The Star.-Then the wise men went on toward Bethlehem. On the way they looked up to the sky, and there was the star which they had seen in the east. And lo, it went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. When they beheld the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

The Gifts. And when they came into the house, they saw Jesus with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshipped Him. They opened the treasures which they brought with them, and gave Him gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Going Home. They were now ready to go home again to their eastern country. But God told them in a dream that they should not go back to Herod and tell him where Jesus was; so they returned home another way.
